Fangs God It’s Friday: Darvell

I rewatched the film Byzantium this week, and there’s a lot to love in this film for the hardcore vampire fans. Among the things that make this film so great are its cast. I could easily spend weeks highlighting the characters from this film. Last year, I focused on one of the main characters, Eleanor. This time, I’m going for the supporting cast to talk about Darvell.

Sam Riley as a vampire in the film Byzantium

Sam Riley plays the part of Darvell, a wealthy midshipman who gains immortality. He’s one of the most mysterious characters in the film. He’s somewhat of an antagonist, working with others of his kind to hunt down the main characters Eleanor and Clara. The two are apparently the only female vampires, and the male vampires want them destroyed. You never can quite be certain what his personal agenda might be until the end.

Out of the many characters in the film, he’s one I’d love to see revisited. Since he’s relegated to a supporting role in the film, Darvell presents lots of opportunity to flesh out his character and potentially see what he might be like once he goes from the hunter to the hunted.

About Bill Blume

Bill Blume discovered his love for the written word while in high school and has been writing ever since. His latest book Gidion's Blood is being released on August 11th by Diversion Books. His short stories have been in many fantasy anthologies and various ezines. Just like the father figure in his first novel, Bill works as a 911 dispatcher for Henrico County Police and has done so for more than a decade. He also served as the 2013 chair for James River Writers in Richmond, which produces one of the nation’s best annual conferences for educating and connecting writers.
